While Charles “Chic” Shaver was a student at Dartmouth College, of Ivy League fame, he had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ that transformed his life. Soon after his conversion, he changed his life plans from a law career to the ministry.

In 2000, he retired, after thirty years, from full time teaching at Nazarene Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Missouri, where he served as the Frank and Gladys Cooper professor of evangelism. In December 2003, he concluded his ministry as associate pastor of Outreach and Evangelism at First Church of the Nazarene, Kansas City, where he had served since 1974. From February to May 2005, he served in a four-month specialized assignment as Guest Pastor of
Outreach Ministries at Spring Branch Church of the Nazarene in Houston, Texas. In 2007, he led an intensive, six-week, evangelism training for all pastors of the Alaska District Church of the Nazarene.

His ministry has included the planting and pastoring of two home mission churches, the first of which began in a remodeled horse shed. He has been a full-time evangelist and has preached in camp meetings and at all ten colleges or universities of the Church of the Nazarene in USA and Canada. Dr. Shaver has conducted over 900 preaching missions and preached at the headquarters of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. He has taught evangelism in
Johannesburg, South Africa; Manila, Philippines; Seoul, Korea; and Moscow, Russia. He concluded preaching spiritual renewal weeks and revivals across the USA in 2023.

Dr. Shaver has degrees from Dartmouth College (A.B.), Nazarene Theological Seminary (M. Div.) and Fuller Seminary (D. Min.). He has written twelve books or Bible studies and produced seven CDs or DVDs. The Journey, Basic Bible Studies for New and Growing Christians, first published in 1972, has continued to this day. As of September 2024, 771,026 copies have been published in English. We believe it has been translated into 55 languages. Forty-two of these translations can be downloaded from the Wesleyan Holiness Digital Library (WHDL) for free.

On July 27th, 2008, Dr. Shaver was presented the Distinguished Service Award by World Mission Literature, Nazarene Missions International, and Kansas City First Church of the Nazarene. The citation read, “Your commitment and passion for reaching the lost and discipling new believers is evident through your Basic Bible Studies. The Albanian translation [the 50th language] makes these the most translated pieces of literature in the Church of the Nazarene."

In 2019, the general church released Dr. Shaver's twelve-lesson online course on witnessing, available at thediscipleshipplace.org. The revised version of his book The Bible Speaks to Me About My Witness was published in 2018. This book is also available on the Wesleyan-Holiness Digital Library (whdl.org).

On February 12, 2019, Dr. Shaver and Nancy received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his ministry as an evangelist. This occurred before 3000-4000 clergy and leaders at the M19 conference, Kansas City. At this conference, The Foundry Publishing released Basic Bible Studies in an online version compatible with smartphones. In 2022, The Foundry released Living
In The Blessing, A 365 Daily Devotional by Dr. Shaver. It is a product of over 40 years, and his most inspired work. A special feature of this book is to explain sanctification and the Spirit-filled life in language understandable to everyday people. As of December 2024, The Foundry, with Amazon had sold over 12,000 hardback copies in English. Jesus Film Harvest Partners has translated the book into seven languages from Spanish to Hindi (Language of India). Three other translations are in process. On June 16, Jesus Film Harvest Partners reported they had decided to translate into Chinese (Mandarin).

On June 16, 2021, I prayed Living in the Blessing would go out into the hundreds of thousands. The Lord spoke to me, “This my Gift and I will provide for its dissemination.” A week after this prayer, Brian Helstrom, of Jesus Film, told me they would translate the book into nine languages. People would get the book on their smart phones through WHDL for free, and over 100,000 would read the book! I can no longer travel, preach, or teach anymore, but my
book will preach and teach for me.

Dr. Shaver's wife is Nancy and have been joyfully married since June 1,1959. Their children are Rachel, Paul, and Miriam.
